World Water Day, held on 22 March every year since 1993, focuses on the importance of freshwater. World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
This year’s annual water day celebration was held at Malaimagal Tamil Vidyalaya in Rangala. The event was organized by SUNFO Global Federation. Also, SUNFO Director-General Dr.Deshapriya had invited youth activists including the Volunteer Forum to join hands on this. The reason this event is held around the Knuckles is that it is one of the most important watersheds in the world and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
An art exhibition was held for the school children to coincide with this event. The students had drawn a larger number of beautiful paintings than expected. Certificates were awarded to the students and a lecture was given by the wildlife department to educate the students about watersheds, knuckles, and the importance of water day. At the end of the event, Ceyko international PVT ltd donated water purification units and sanitization products to the school.
At the end of the event, the 7km Knuckles Mountain Challenge began with the Water World Day message. Several young volunteers including DG and ADG from the Volunteer forum participated in this hiking trip. Mr. Indika who has recorded in mountaineering joined to guide the participants in the hike. The event ended with the World Water Day message being spread around the world
